The 60s didn't even happen as we're told

The top 100 confirms what I've heard for some time in recent years, i.e. the 60s didn't properly start until after the Kennedy assassination (some say until the summer of love) and ended when the draft ended.

The popularity - or lack thereof - of acts like Doors, Dylan and psychedelicrock in general suggests that for a significant percentage of the youth the 60s didn't even happen.

So much good stuff didn't make it !

In England we were bombarded with far too much Presley, bachelors,ValDoonican,Ken Dodd, Humperdinck on the radio when the stations should have been playing the Seeds,13th Floor Elevators,Love,Shocking Blue,Earth & Fire (from Holland) not the 'wind' one.Thankfully thanks to youtube many obscurities are only now surfacing

This list stinks.+

I cannot believe that the Four Seasons did not make this list. Theypractically gave the Beatles a run for their money. Have of these songs don't even belong on this list. +

Don't be ridiculous The Beatles have more than 100 songs in various charts from all over the world during the 1960s. The Four Seasons have less than 30 with fewer than 10 being hits outside North America.

You could validly discuss whether The Four Seasons were as impressive as, for example The Temptations. Our numbers say they weren't but that could be a good discussion. But during the 1960s they were clearly not in the same league as Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, The Monkees, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Otis Redding or The Supremes.

Hello there, I suggest again, USE French charts from http://www.top-france.fryour French charts seems not real hope some new sources could be useful+

We'll have a look at that site and see what we can use

How can Frankie valli & the Four Seasons not have one song on here Makes no sense

That's what the numbers say

How come no Herman's Hermits tunes. Peter Noone is very popular right now

They may not be in the top 100 for the 1960s but we still have a page of songs and a page of albums by them. Either follow the link on artist 39 or ry typing their name into the search box top right

Female group the cherishes

Never had a hit anywhere (under that name) as far as we can see

Elvis

I'm surprised Elvis- Crying in the Chapel (1965) not on the list is was a massive No 1 hit selling millions plus think its the best or 2nd best selling Gospel song ever.

It was number one in the UK, Canada and other countries but it only peaked at number 3 in the US.

It is the 16th song of 1965 and as such is outside the top 100 songs of the decade

pop song, +I Will

Not Billy Fury's recording, Who else recorded it in the 50s?

The short answer is no one had a hit with it in the 1950s, it was a hit of the 1960s

Billy Fury's hit was in 1964.

It was also a hit for Vic Dana (1962), Dean Martin (1965) and The Beatles, but all in the early 1960s

Hey Jude is number #3 ?+

HEy Jude is always bigger than Satisfaction this was very wrong!!!

"Hey Jude" hit in 51 charts, number one in 26 of them, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" hit in 46 charts, number one in 17 of them.

Clearly "Hey Jude" should be rated higher

Want copy of 1950s song "Makin' Love"

Don't remember who sang the song and it might have been in the very early'60s. +Lyrics went something like: "Makin love, makin love, makin love, makin love. +Don't care what they think, don't care what they do, all I ever care about is you."

We would suggest Floyd Robinson's 1959 hit "Makin' Love"

river stay away from my door

river stay away from my door

The song "River Stay 'Way From My Door" was a hit for Frank Sinatra in 1960 (in the UK, Canada and the US) and for Paul Robeson in 1931

Exclusion of 4 Seasons is silly

Group in combination with Frankie Valli solo singles was #4 in record sales during the 60's according to Joel Whitburn's research.

Only Beatles, Elvis and Ray Charles sold more records than the Seasons. Sillyto leave them off list. Should be in the top 5. Their play worldwide has grossed more than 1 billion dollars. Shows how inept the makers of this list are.

Firstly this is a worldwide list, not a US based one, the Four Seasons had little success outside the US (and while the US is the single most important music market it is only about one third of the world's total).

Secondly positions on the list are earned by actual entries in real charts, where an act "should" be has no influence. Your opinion has no impact, and indeed OUR opinion has no impact either. Once the rules are set the position that each artist ends up at is calculated without any human intervention.

The 4 Seasons not one of the top 50 acts?

Over 100 million singles/lp's sold? 4 #1 singles: Sherry (5 weeks -Sept-Oct 1962)...

This doesn't include several "B Side" titles that charted -some of them breaking the top 40 on their own: "Connie-o" "Silence Is Golden" "Marlena" "No Surfin' Today". That's way more hits than Bob Dylan released as singles (and never had a #1) ... who you claim is #5, or the Dave Clark 5 (who hit #1 in the U. S. for one week, quitting in 1966, or any other names on your list with the exception of the Beatles, Elvis, the Supremes, and perhaps the Rolling Stones (who never held #1 for more than 4 weeks in the U. S.) The Beach Boys never hit #1 for more than 2 weeks, and only did that three times (I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda - 2 weeks, Good Vibrations - 1 week). They weren't called "America's Band" until 1974, and that was a promo scheme. In the 70's the 4 Seasons had their fifth #1 (December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)for 4 weeks). The Beach Boys 4th #1 happened ... in 1989, again, for 2 weeks (Kokomo).

A Tony Award winning play has been running on Broadway and has gone on tour, internationally. My guess is that you rewrite history books for the Texas Department of Education.

This is a list of worldwide success not US success. The Four Seasons had very little album success (and none at all outside the US and UK). None of their songs managed to get higher than 12th in the worldwide annual list.

If you think that there is a better way to calculate success then download the CSV file, try out an alternate approach and tell us about it.

It seems to us that you are the one deciding things based on faith in direct contradiction of available evidence.

Redding, Hendrix

I was shocked that Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix were so low, particularly Hendrix. This list really drove home the fact that so much was left unaccomplished by two fantastic performers.

Indeed. Part of the issue is that these charts list success for 1960-1969. Jimi Hendrix had some chart success after his death in 1970, but of course that doesn't contribute to this listing.

Extended +Tables II

Hi there... thank you for your answer. That really would work if i know how to handle excel (or other). I'm just a curious and i love music from all times. From what i can see in this table for example, is that most of songs are from 65 to 69. There are only 2 songs from 1961.

It's cool to look at this data, so i wonder if the table were extended would it remain the same or songs from 60 to 65 would increase. Since i don't know how to work with excel and it seems to me that it is easy for you

Just the decades from 60's because i think it was the time the music industry began to take a major activity... i think :) Thanks in advance. Once again iadmire your work a LOT!

If you want to answer questions like these you should really invest the time in learning to use a spreadsheet program. There are some really good programs out there, for example "Calc" from OpenOffice.org has a good reputation and is free.

Alternately if you understand Statistics then an analysis program like "R" (which is also free) might be worth investigating.

To answer your specific question as the number of songs considered goes from the top 10 to the top 1000 the bias towards songs from 1966 and later actually increases. In part this is because there are more contributing charts from later in the decade, so naturally the accumulated score will be larger. However a quick calculation seems to show that this factor does not account for all the increase.

If a graph is plotted of the proportion of all chart entries which are in the top 1000 songs of the decade it trends upwards for the whole decade. This trend shows two big jumps in 1963 and 1966.

So the answer to your question is that clearly something changed in the music industry during the 1960s, with big jumps in 1963 and 1966. This type of simple calculation is too crude to tell us what, but it does indicate that the charts of 1969 have a different character than those of 1960.

Extended Tables

Hi there...

Is there any possiblity for you to extend the tables by decade?

Mainly since the 60's... As it is (100) don't you feel like some other hits are missing? I Know they aren't but i just miss them in the chart! :) Thanks for your great Work!

We could extend the number of entries in the decade charts, but that would make the pages always take longer to load and most users are, we think, only interested in the top few songs anyway.

However, you can, of course, work out the decade positions from our CSV file with any spreadsheet program. For example in Excel load the file, add a decade column by setting cell N2 as "=INT(D2/10)*10" then copy that cell for all the N column and sort by type, decade and score (high to low).

This is why we supply the CSV file, not only can you work out which song was number 200 of the sixties but you can try out all sorts of different ways to analyse the data. If you find anything interesting tell us about it.
