A song omitted

Where is "Hello Dolly"?

Its listed in 1964, because that's when it was a hit. The song "Hello Dolly" was a hit for various artists (Frank Sinatra, Frankie Vaughan and Kenny Ball for example). The biggest hit was Louis Armstrong's version which entered the Billboard charts in Feb 1964, in fact it entered all its charts during 1964.

Name of song or narrative

I think it was about 1964 a song about a yodeler "He yodeled to the east, then he yodeled to the west, He yodeled to the north then he yodeled south, then a bird flew in his mouth. The ASPC made him keep the bird nest 'till the birds hatched. A news Reporter came, he interview a girl and said what is your name she said Heidi, He said hidey to you, what is your name, she said Heidi, He said hidey Heidi, he said what is your name she said "Heidi Folks" I thought the name of this was "The Busch Baverian Yodeler". As you can see I'm the worlds worst speller. This is all I can remember of it and I'm sure it's not exactly right. Thanks

No.61 Charles Aznavour - La Mamma

At No.61 it reads 550k Sales estimated. +What does the k stand for ?

Thanks, Maurice

k is thousands, M is millions

I guess you must be from North America, the rest of the world uses the metric system. For example Hz - cycles per second, kHz thousands of cycles per seconds, MHz millions of cycles per second

Re: Song Year

Your method is giving the same weighting to countries with vastly different population sizes. In the case of 'Keep Searching' (We'll Follow The Sun)' this means that Norway is given the same significance as US in your 'median' methodology for assigning it to 1965. Even with the combination of the other '1965' countries, your readership is going to be greater in the US and Canada combined, thereby demonstrating a flaw in your 'more readers' logic.

Also, you are not including all countries where a song charted. For example with 'Keep Searching', this song charted in Australia at the end of 1964. Therefore, you do not have all observations to determine the 'median' internationally.

Therefore, once again, I suggest that the most appropriate way to assign ayear to a song is according to the chart year of its country of origin - 'I'm Telling You Now' in 1963 (UK) and 'Keep Searching' in 1964 (US) etc. This will better show the 'sounds' of a given year while also meaning more to your readership in terms of when their own country's songs charted.

Population of countries has nothing to do with it, if it did India and China would dominate. We base our calculations on market size. Norway is much smaller than the US, that is exactly why there is one song chart from Norway and (for this song) 7 from the US. So Norway is not given the same significance as the US, CashBox is given the same significance as WABC NY, Norway gets the same impact as Record World.

Of course we can only include dates from charts that we have, the fact that this was a hit in Australia in a chart we have no data for cannot influence the year we assign.

Apart from those minor issue there are two different problems with your argument, first of all the song "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)" is not "clearly" from 1964. Not only did some US charts assign it to 1965 (such as the CashBox one), not only did the song spend significant parts of its US chart run in 1965, but also the North American market for music is about the same size as the combined European one and every country in Europe has it in 1965.

But, even if we agreed that this song "should" be assigned to 1964, how could we implement that? We have to process more than 30,000 song artists, are you suggesting we should assign each one a country of origin? How long do you think it would take to work that out (where does "Fleetwood Mac" come from, for example)? Even if every artist was assigned a country how would you set the years for hits that were not hits there? What if an artist came from a country without a chart? Your suggestion just leads to a whole load of questions.

The median year approach is not perfect, we can agree with you there, but it is "good enough" in most cases, it relies only on the data within the charts (no additional unreliable source of data is needed) and it is implementable within the constraints of available effort.

Until someone can suggest an alternate approach that is feasible we'll stay with this one.

billboard magazines 1964

would you know which issue contained the Bullet Pick top 100 for "The Reactions" songs "That Girl" and "Our Wonderful Love" on The Mutual Record Label? If so, where can I get a copy? Thank You.

The group "The Reactions" did not have any hits in the Billboard Hot 100 (or anywhere else)

Rock tune, 1964

I'm looking for a song, artist unknown, that seems to have charted in the US in Jan 1964. The only title I have is "Bigtime Boy" or "Big Time Boy" but that must be wrong.

The words could be part of the lyric, however. Any ideas?

"Long Time Boy" (1961) by Nina & Frederik?

You could go to the Bullfrog site and download their spreadsheet, that would list all the songs from Jan 1964

The comment from March of 2012

You're probably thinking of The Essex's 1963 album "Easier Said Than Done"

Marine Corps Group

The group of Marines was The Essex, and their 1963 hit song was "Easier Said Than Done".

Check out my blog post at http://jeffsharletandvietnamgi.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Thanks for the info

1963 hit by black us group men and women all us marines - one was in my USC unit

I am looking for a 1963 or 1964 us hit record by a black group of men and women all members of the us marine corps

The obvious candidate would be "Ballad of the Green Berets" by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler. Except that was 1966 and he wasn't black (we're almost certain).

So, no we don't have a clue.

Ray charles #2

Sorry, but I have to tell you there are 2 different Ray Charles in the world of music, one of them are a composer born Charles Raymond Offenberg and the other a blind pianist born Ray Charles Robinson from georgia. The first made some pretty succesfull records with some singers he called "The Ray Charles Singers", and they have nothing to do with the more famous soul singer Ray Charles.

But still this is one great site, Yours Sensimilla.

You are completely correct, we've tried to fix all the appropriate entries.

19 Oct 2010

Ray Charles Singers.

On Wikipedia it says that "The Ray Charles Singers", got a 1964 hit with the song "Love me with all of your heart".

Thx for a fantastic site, and your big-big effort.

Yours Sensimilla.

You are correct, the songs listed on this site as being by Ray Charles were originally credited to "Ray Charles", "The Ray Charles Trio", "Ray Charles & the Raelettes" or "The Ray Charles Singers". In some cases they were listed differently in different countries.

On this site we have consolidated all these together under "Ray Charles" since, for most users, it is more interesting to see his complete career in one place rather than having to search for the various combinations of names he happened to use. We feel is is easy enough to use Wikipedia and other sources to identify the actual artist name credited in an individual song in an individual country. Our role is to allow the user to identify other hits by the same artist and other locations where the same song was a hit, even if credited to a slightly different name.

There is, of course, no absolutely right answer here. Our position is to err on the side of too much consolidation, since we see our unique contribution in the wide range of countries and years that we cover. We assume that sources that focus on single countries, artists or short time periods can differentiate between the songs by "Ray Charles", "The Ray Charles Trio" and "Ray Charles & the Raelettes"

#1 billboard song

We suspect that your question is about the #1 song in the Billboard Hot 100 chart on a specific date in 1964.

Since you don't specify a date we can't answer, however you can find out yourself by looking at the page:
