How did he perform on The American Cashbox singles charts with the song Devil Woman?
Since the song is listed, and the Cashbox chart is included on that entry, you can read the answer to your question there.

Looking for a song
I graduated in 1976 and there was +a song that came out, I believe, rightbefore graduation so we heard it too late to make it our class song. +We ended up playing it over the PA system on the last day of school. +The name of the song was "Friend" and I'm not sure of the band name but I thought it was Baby. +The lyrics started out "Friend, I will remember you, think of you, pray for you......" +Never heard it again after that day. +Coming up on our 40 year reunion and I thought it would be cool to play it again. +Any clues?
No entry for "Friend" by Baby. Here are some possible entries: Feather "Friends" (1970), Elton John "Friends" (1971), Bette Midler "Friends" (1973), Bill Withers "Friends of mine" (1973), John Denver "Friend with You" (1971), The Partridge Family "Friend & A Lover" (1973), The Beach Boys "Friends" (1968), and The Zombies "Friends of mine" (1967)

We suspect the "Frog Chorus" in Paul McCartney's "We All Stand Together" but that was 1984

middle east conflict 1976
this song was broadcast in 1976 about. it was popular for a short while. the theme was about peace between peoples (arab / israeli )and was called 'love is the key. the main voice is an arab woman singing in arabic and the back ground singers were chanting in english 'love is the the key' the song has quite a slow lilting tempo.

any relation to Gary Hawtin, RAF Benson, 1978--- 1980 colin 'sparky' doyle
Everyone called Hawtin is descended from Richard Hawtaine (of the Ley) who died in the 1480s and has a memorial in Swerford Church, near Banbury.
So yes, a distant cousin

Who sang this song?
The original version was by America and was a minor hit in 1973.
The version you are thinking of was by Captain & Tennille and was: Canada RPM 1 for 1 week - Jan 1977, Record World 2 - 1976, US Billboard 4 - Sep 1976 (19 weeks), US Gold (certified by RIAA in Dec 1976), Canada 5 - Oct 1976 (10 weeks), France 10 - Jan 1977 (1 week), US CashBox 30 of 1976, US Radio 30 of 1976 (peak 4 10 weeks), WABC NY 54 of 1976
If you had looked in the index or used the search box on the top right you would have found it.

Exile did have a hit called "Try It On" which reached 97 in the Billboard chart in March 1977. It never made it to any other chart, its listed on the group's song page.

John Christie Heres to love
There was deinitely a song in that year and would love to get a copy of it
Steve
The song "Here's To Love" was in the UK charts for 6 weeks and reached number 24. It was not a hit anywhere else and was John Christie's only hit. As such he didn't have enough success to be listed on this site.
I see that you are in the UK, amazon.co.uk have the 7" for sale via the seller ChayesMusic
