Entry 52 Oklahoma

Firstly - Live your site and amazing amount of information. +Re Entry 52Oklahoma, I believe this should be "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" - a song from Oklahoma - Bing recorded in 1943 with Trudy Erwin.

That seems likely, however the source data for three different charts has the same, and, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" was not a seperate hit anywhere.

So, we feel that while you are probably correct there is not enough reason for us to adjust the original data.

6 May 2015

#57 - Duets w/Helen Ward

Day In Day Out should be moved from this Bing Crosby page to Bob Crosby & Orch. (per Joel Whitburn). This recording is currently #4 on the Bob Crosby page.

Joel Whitburn focuses on the Billboard list, so the fact that both he and Billboard assign the song to Bob Crosby is not surprising. In contrast the original source for this list clearly assigns it to Bing (and Helen Ward). Given that during this era it was the sheet music that was primary (and different singers covered each other's songs) we don't see enough evidence to prove the original source was wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion

The UK has a chart book from 1940 -1952

The Studio Recordings Title is "Amor, Amor" (Accoring to this Link). So the entry in 1944 is not excisting.

Your suggestion looks correct, we have adjusted the entries, thanks

#29 Oklahoma

Your source regarding Bing Crosby recorded Oklahoma is wrong (It's hard to prove, but easy for you to prove me wrong! :-) ). The most popular version in 1943 is a recording by Alfred Drake.

Yours Sensimilla.

As the data shows there are three different sources. We suspect that you could be correct, however since the three sources each actually have the entry we have to list them.

Bing Crosby

It is now clear that Bing Crosby was the man.

Well he was well before my time, it appears from my research that Bing has more number One/top thirty hit's that anyone else.

In fact no one even comes close, in addition to no one being Number One for two decades in a row.

Mr. B. Cosby accomplished the above during the Great Depression and World War Two, which is quite remarkable.

I might add that Bing was a hugely popular radio/movie star +being Number Box office from '45-'49 as well as receiving academy awards. While, I love Elvis, the Beatles, & Michael Jackson the facts speak for themselves that B. Crosby is the MAN.

That is certainly a valid position to hold.

Our estimate is that any one of Bing Crosby, The Beatles, Elvis, Paul Whiteman, Frank Sinatra or Glenn Miller could feasibly be claimed to be the most successful musical acts of the 20th century, depending on how you combine the evidence. For most approaches the top act works out as Bing Crosby, The Beatles or Elvis, but the others turn up for some metrics.

Our calculation is that if Madonna continues to be successful for another decade or so she would join that elite list.

It depends on how you estimate success, but our numbers indicate that Bing Crosby is certainly one of the top 3.

# 24 A Frined of Yours

Both Crosby and Sinatra recorded this song individually, but I can find no evidence of a duet. I suspect that both recordings achieved popularity in Australia, and thus both oof their names are on the credit. But since they are two separate recordings, I'm wondering if they shouldn't have separate listings.

You are almost certainly correct. Before the late 1950s it was common to list the "top 10 songs" without crediting them to any particular artist, when charts are retrospectively calculated (as the Kent chart was for Australia) the compiler might list the most popular versions. When we are faced with an artist entry of "Bing Crosby & Frank Sinatra" we can't tell if that is a duet or two different versions.

Anyway we've seperated these two out, thanks for the suggestion.
