Lonnie Donigan Pt 2
According to Cash Box Magazine, Rock Island Line entered the charts on March 31, 1956 and was on there for 12 weeks. It reached #5 April 28, 1956.
As a side note, I remember first hearing Rock Island Line in April of that year (I was thirteen). Jest as we tie songs to points in our lives, so was Rock Island Line. I can recall listening to "a mighty fine line" on KOMA -- in 1956
Our listing says "US CashBox 6 - Mar 1956 (12 weeks)", which is just about what you suggest except we have it peaking at number 6, not number 5. If you look at the CashBox source listing for the week of 28 April 1956 (at http://cashboxmagazine.com/archives/50s_files/19560428.html ) you will see that "WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE" is in the number 5 position and "Rock Island Line" was at number 6.

song title please
I remember listening to the radio when living at the Finsbury Hostel in Adelaide, after travelling with my parents as £10 pounds, in 1955,8yrs old.
I can only remember some words..... on the babies knuckle or the babies knee, where would the babies dimple be, babies cheek or babies chin seems to me it would be a sin if its always covered by a safety pin where would the dimple be....... Its been niggling me for months, then i found this site and wondered if you could help. thanks

resposta

April in Paris
The Count Basie "April in Paris" Grammy Hall of Fame version is not the version featuring Ella Fitzgerald. The correct version (clef 89162) features Thad Jones on trumpet.
contributing source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_in_Paris_(song)
The 1955 single Clef 89162 which had an A side of "Roll 'Em Pete" (the version by Pete Johnson is better known) had "April in Paris" on the B side (despite the mis-listing on some sources) and was not a hit in any contemporary chart.
Clef 89172 (with Ella Fitzgerald on vocals) had "April in Paris" as the A side and was a hit in Billboard and Cashbox (early in 1956).
The Grammy Hall of Fame site doesn't have the label number (just the year), however since the year listed there is 1955 that would indicate that you are correct.
We suspect that either the release of the Ella Fitzgerald version was actually late 1955 or that the Grammy Hall of Fame made a mistake. However without any evidence to support that we have to assume that the sources (and you) are right, so we've edited the data.
An interesting case, thanks for the input.

Lonnie Donegan
Could you please provide info as to where Lonnie Donegan's Rock Island Line placed on the Billboard charts.
Thanks.
There is a page for Lonnie Donegan that has that information on it, "Rock Island Line" was song number 40 of 1955. It reached number 8 in the Billboard charts (its run there was 17 weeks starting Mar 1956).
We suspect that the year of 1954 on the Acclaimed music site is incorrect, since it entered both the US and UK charts in 1956. Our calculation places it in 1955, as do the RYM and DDD sites, because that is between the Acclaimed and Billboard dates.
Lonnie Donegan's version was the most successful although Leadbelly had a version of the song in 1944. Following Lonnie Donegan's hit it was a hit for Don Cornell in the US and Stan Freberg in the UK. Johnny Cash's version was number 93 in the Billboard chart in Feb 1970.
