Nina Simone
It's my mistake. Nina Simone - My baby just cares for me was top ten hit in UK in 1987. not 1957. But it was released in 1957.

1955 - 1958 Whitburn Data
You point out a major flaw in the Whitburn data. However, the problem extendsto way before 1955. Whitburn used his own research to compile his charts up through 1933 since there were no published charts for that period. He started using the Billboard charts in 1934 when the first appeared. However, even then there were multiple charts and he scored artists based on whichever chart they did the best. Naturally this results in some overlap of dates. If you add up the total weeks of Number 1 hits for 1934 for example you come up with 73 weeks. So that entire period from 1934 through 1958 is over inflated. It is unfortunate that he did not select one chart as a benchmark and follow that through, but it is what it is.

#54 The Twelfth of Never
According to Joel Whitburn this charted at #9, not #51.
The first Billboard Hot 100 chart was published in Aug 1958. From 1955 up to Aug 1958 there were three source charts (Sales in Stores, DJ plays and Jukebox plays) these were combined into a "The Top 100" by Billboard. We consider only the "The Top 100" chart position, Whitburn however takes the highest position from all four charts, this is clearly a bad approach. For records from 1957 to Aug 1958 we consider his peaks to be misleading.

#51 Around the World
According to Joel Whitburn this charted at #25, not #54. However, Silent Night did chart at #54 that year.
We think that your position of 25 is an error. The original Bullfrog data has a peak of 54, the later "20150328" data does show a peak of 25 but it also says that "Decca 9-30262" entered the charts on 20/05/1957 and had the following positions: 72, 61, 67, 67, 57, 64, 68, 57, 60, 73, 61, 71, 77, 79, 87, 79, 92, 63, 60, 57, 54, 94, 85, 96, 91, 90, 86, 84, 92
As you can see this is 29 weeks (not 31) and the peak is 54 not 25.
In the "20150328" entries between 1958_008 and 1957_354 have peak positions that are inconsistent with the full chart histories (in the same spreadsheet), they seem to have been edited incorrectly.

A song nobody can remember; +4th July 2015
I too am trying to track down“ The Magic Of Candlelight “ which was the title of the song, +first line ( soft as snow are your eyes tonight ) etc. + I was led to believe that it originally came over from America and was part of a possible album sung by some of the crew, +I do believe it could be somewhat older than 1957 but am not sure. +If you get any response I would be very grateful if you could get in touch via my email.

Name of the song is "Pickle Up A Doodle" By Teresa Brewer
If you look at the Teresa Brewer page you will see that the song is listed there. It was a very minor hit in 1958 (not 1957), and by "very minor" we mean it was in a single chart for a single week reaching number 99

A song nobody can remember help!
I'm looking for a song for my grandma that nobody seems to know if anyone can help me, she doesn't know who sang the song but says it's from 1956/57 and she +remembers some of the lyrics, it goes like this " soft as snow are your eyes tonight in the glow of the candle light, softer still are the words you speak as your lips brush my cheek, time stands still as you hold me near, will this thrill ever disappear, is it real what I feel tonight in the magic of candlelight" +hopefully someone will remember this :) thank you+

Double Listing
"That'll Be the Day" seems to be on your list twice. # 8 ( The Crickets ) and # 57 ( Buddy Holly ). I'm pretty sure this is the same song. Thanks
That looks correct. The data has been fixed, thanks for the suggestion

Tommy Sands - Teenage Crush
Strange that Tommy Sands Teenage Crush does not appear in Top 100. Billboard has it No.3 in Feb 57 and Cash Box at No.2 and earned a Gold Record.
How was it missed?
Thanks, Maurice (from Canada)
We have it as "Teen-age Crush", a hit in Billboard and Canada but nowhere else
To get into this listing it would need more chart entries

An English song from the 1950's
I am searching for a song I heard on the radio (probably Childrens Favourites in the 1950's) that contained the following lyrics "When a typically English suitor, in a typically English suit. Comes to take me out to typically English tea. (Two more lines I've forgotten) My mother makes it typically English three." I have searched the Internet but no luck so far. Can you help? Thanks
No idea. We strongly suspect it was never a hit

Buddy Holly/The Crickets/Brunswick/Coral
US Decca was established by the UK Decca company in the 1920s but had to sell its controlling interest. This resulted in UK Decca creating the London label in the US for UK artists and using Brunswick in the UK for release of US Decca output.
The UK version of Coral was used by UK Decca for release of US Brunswick and Coral material. Confusing!
Today, the UK Decca label belongs to UMG - the French Universal Music Group, while US Decca, Brunswick and Coral belong to MCA - the US-based Music Corporation of America...

That'll Be The Day
Songs by Buddy Holly and the Crickets were on either the Coral or Brunswick label. Coral releases were by Buddy Holly, while Brunswick releases were by The Crickets. Up until late '58, when Buddy Holly went to New York to persue a solo career, any songs released by either label was by Buddy Holly and The Crickets One of the oddities about the recording industry, Decca, the parent company of both Coral and Brunswick, had rejected Buddy Holly.
That is an interesting short review of the situation in the US, of course the situation was different in the UK and Australia. He toured the UK in 1958 and had more success here than he had at at the time at home.

Dark Moon
Who was the original singer of dark moon
We only list entries in music charts, not all the records released. The song "Dark Moon" was not a hit until 1957, when three different acts had success with it:
Gale Storm - "Dark Moon" (1957) - Canada 3 - May 1957 (9 weeks), US Billboard 5 - Apr 1957 (23 weeks), US CashBox 31 of 1957
Bonnie Guitar - "Dark Moon" (1957) - US Billboard 8 - Apr 1957 (22 weeks)
Tony Brent - "Dark Moon" (1957) - UK 17 - Jun 1957 (14 weeks)

I listened to Radio Luxembourg in the late fifties and one song still hauntsme to this day. All I can remember is one line "start moving in my direction and start our loving tonight" I would love to know the title and who sang it
The song is "Start Movin' (In My Direction)" by Sal Mineo and it was a hit in 1957 reaching number 4 in Canada, number 10 in the US and number 16 in the UK.

credit error
You have listed 'That'll be the Day' twice. One is credited to The Crickets (#16) and the other to Buddy Holly (#21). However, it is the same record, which was originally credited to The Crickets.
I really dig your site!
You are right, the two songs are the same.
We think it was credited to different people in different markets, we think that in some regions it was "Buddy Holly & The Crickets" and in other locations "The Crickets". That is what makes consolidating these lists interesting.
We have fixed "That'll be the Day" and attempted to explain the situation on the artist pages.
Thanks for the input
