SUBJ1
Her first jazz recording, “The Songs of Bessie Smith,” was with Count Basie, and she performed on one of Duke Ellington’s last albums, “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.” But some jazz critics praised her performances for both musicality and emotionality. Nat Hentoff wrote: “Teresa Brewer is irrepressibly herself, constantly evolving, constantly enjoying the surprise of herself. The woman is a phenomenon.”
