Started with various groups like Sallyangie (with his sister Sally Oldfield), Barefoot and The Whole World before coming up with a solo project. His concept was rejected by a succession of record companies before the newly formed Virgin label picked it up. "Tubular Bells" was such a success that the label's founder (Richard Branson) used the proceeds to fund other things. He employed a variety of vocalists, from Vivian Stanshall (of The Bonzo Dog Band) for "Tubular Bells", Roger Chapman (of Family) for "Shadow On The Wall" and Jon Anderson and Bonnie Tyler for "Island".

Well, I have the records at home. Some international pressings can be read as joint efforts. But the official Mike Oldfield discography credits them to Mike Oldfield alone. Most important thing is that Moonlight Shadow got the points it deserved in the top 100 of 1983.

As you are obviously aware the listing on any one record is only a guide to the artist we assign a song to. Many records have different listings in different markets. However given the fact that M.C. Strong lists them under "Mike Oldfield" we will do the same.

Mike Oldfield contributions

The 5 songs listed as contributions, should be added to the normal Mike Oldfield list. Some of them are already there, like Moonlight Shadow and To France.

Thanks for the input. You are clearly correct for "Moonlight Shadow", "To France" and "Shine", we have changed them in the source data.

The two other songs ("Island" and "Shadow On The Wall") are less clear, the original sources fairly consistently list them as joint efforts, but Wikipedia does support your suggestion. For the moment we have left them as they were while we investigate further.
