A system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. Although the two terms are sometimes conflated in popular use, World Wide Web is not synonymous with Internet. The Web is an application built on top of the Internet.

Building Web Sites

Formal Definition

In order for the web to be widely accessible it is important that a clear definition of the various protocols, interfaces and services is shared. For the web the most important elements are defined in Request for Comments documents. In particular RFC-1945 defines the HTTP protocol.
