The user interface (also known as human computer interface (HCI) or man-machine interface (MMI)) is the combination of means by which the user interacts with a system. The user interface can be considered to be a combination of the elements in this diagram. Each layer is important in order to create a good user interface, however the topic of Information Architecture has little to say about the surface and skeleton layers and usually requires the scope and strategy to be defined before the information architect gets started. So from our point of view the key element of the user interface is the structure. In cases where the scope and strategy are not well documented they can be brought out by discussing the use cases for the system.
