A project is a collaborative enterprise, that is carefully planned to achieve a particular well defined aim within a constrained time, cost and resource usage. Any activity that does not have a defined end point us usually better considered as a service. There are two main "formal" methodologies for project management, PRINCE2 and PMBoK. In fact both approaches have a common underlying approach and, since each has its own strengths any good project manager should be familiar with both. All good project management approaches focus on first obtaining a clear and well documented business case. This then defines what the goal of the project is, determines the resources available and documents the criteria for completion of the project.
