Any location where data resides. Usually this will be a database or some other logical or physical location.

The majority of databases are also repositories, however not all important data repositories are databases. When considering the ways that businesses run it is common to find key data elements that are not located within computers at all. Such physical repositories often hold critical elements.

When considering Data Management there is usually a mixture of:

  • formal databases, each with a well defined structure
  • collections of "unstructured" data in documents, spreadsheets and web pages
  • other, perhaps physical data sources that may not be held in a digital form at all

The way that information flows between and within these systems is the basis for many elements of information architecture
