In 1970 Bruce Henderson of the Boston Consulting Group created a 2x2 matrix comparing market share and market growth to help clients analyse business units and product lines. This type of simplification has been so useful it has become a standard picture.
Any type of situation where two aspects can each be characterised using two values can be drawn as a Boston Matrix.
