Yeah same here +iam one of the greatest iron maiden fans but ofcourse there lots of bands but no matter what iron maiden is the best

Many artists have numerous its but they're not ranked this high, iron maiden doesn't even have one hit single, how come they're placed so high.

I'm a maiden fan, but i just thought this was unfair.

We can't tell if you think Iron Maiden should be in a position higher than 269th song artist or lower. The fact is that while they have had many song hits these have been mainly confined to the UK and Northern Europe (as the picture top left of this page shows).

However they do have 13 top 10 songs in the UK and more than 80 songs which were hits somewhere.

Other artists with "nearby" rankings include Herman's Hermits, Kim Wilde, OutKast, Blur, New Order, Linkin Park, Ricky Martin and Lady GaGa. This seems about right to us. Being in the top 300 artists in the world since 1900 seems likes a reasonable achievement to us.

We could, but we're not going to, for two different reasons.

Firstly because beyond the top 100 of a year the positions become more and more unreliable. In other words we have no faith in the results.

Secondly, and more importantly, you can work out all the positions yourself. Download the CSV file (from the versions page), load it into a spreadsheet, sort by "type", "year" and "score" (largest to smallest), then edit cell R2 with "=if(D1=D2,R1+1,1)" and copy that into R3:R67919

The CSV file contains all the info you need to do a whole load of analysis, if you find anything interesting tell us
